DIRECT TO FILM

What is DTF or Direct-To-Film Printing?

Direct-to-film (DTF) printing is a water-based digital printing process. A high-resolution image is printed onto a special film and then applied to a garment or other item using pressure and heat.

  1. Design – The design is created using professional software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Corel Draw.
  2. Print – The high-resolution design file is sent to a special commercial printer where the image is printed on a thick, clear PET film. White ink is the foundation for other color pigments to insure vibrant colors on all garments.
  3. Transfer – The film is applied to the garment using a commercial heat press machine. The time, temperature, and pressure required to apply the film depends on the type of garment.
  4. Peel – Once the film is pressed onto the garment, the clear backing can be peeled off to complete the process.

DTF prints can be used on a variety of materials, including cotton, polyester, and all other blends. It can also be used to decorate hard-to-print areas like neck labels, sleeves, and logos. DTF printing can produce vibrant, detailed, and long-lasting graphics that are equal to Screen Printing with a lot less set up.

Our Customer Commitment

At 10:9 Design LLC, we believe in quality above everything else. Direct-to-Film, like many others in our industry, is a technology that gets a bad rap. We hear all the time from clients that they don’t want anything other than screen printing because everything else feels like a “sticker.” When Direct-to-Film first emerged, this was pretty accurate. It was thick and looked more like vinyl. However, over the past couple of years, technology has vastly improved. Before we entered the DTF space, we spent almost five years learning about the technology. We visited manufacturers and trade shows demanding the quality we were willing to sell to our clients. Apparel decoration equipment is very similar to the automotive industry. The options span from budget to ultra-luxury. Just like a budget car, budget printers get the job done, but they don’t compare to the ultra-luxury results. Low-quality results damage client expectations as well as the new technology. When we purchased our printers, our level of investment speaks to the level of commitment we have to the quality we require for our clients. Screen printing is the tried-and-true decoration method, and we are not abandoning it. However, Direct-to-Film removes limitations and allows for a much more affordable option for small quantity and/or high color count artwork. Feel free to stop by and check out our side-by-side screen printing vs. DTF samples in our showroom.

What is a DTF Gang Sheet?

Gang Sheets in the Printing Industry

Gang sheets refer to a printing method where multiple images or designs are grouped on a single sheet of PET film. Commonly used in newspapers, magazines, and custom print applications, gang sheets allow for efficient printing and lower production costs. This method is particularly popular in DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing, a digital method used to create custom designs on various items, such as t-shirts, hats, and bags.

Key Features of Gang Sheets

  • Definition: A “gang” in printing refers to grouping many images on one sheet, often used in the context of complex prints. It is especially useful in print materials like newspapers and magazines, where individual pages are cut and folded.
  • DTF Transfer: DTF printing, a preferred method for gang sheets, uses heat transfer to apply logos and patterns onto materials like textiles. It is widely used in personalized items such as apparel and promotional products.

Benefits of Gang Sheets

  • Cost Efficiency: By grouping multiple designs on one sheet, gang sheets help reduce material and production costs, making it ideal for large orders.
  • Improved Efficiency: Multiple prints can be processed at once, speeding up production and delivery.
  • Precision: Gang sheets help eliminate alignment issues that often arise in individual prints, ensuring high-quality results.

Tips for DTF Gang Sheets

  • Design Software: Efficient use of design software allows for easy organization of multiple designs on a single page. Regularly updating the designs ensures better results.

Purpose of Gang Sheets

Gang sheets optimize material usage, reduce waste, and enhance printing efficiency by allowing several designs to be printed at once.

Washing Instructions

To ensure the longevity of custom gang sheet prints (just as it is with screen printing), they should be washed in cold water. Avoid using high heat in dryers, as this can damage the print. Following these simple guidelines helps maintain the quality of the print for extended use.

***IMPORTANT NOTE***

Gang sheets are a PRINT-ONLY service. We do not inspect your files for quality before printing. You are responsible for image quality, sizing, placement, and colors. If you are unsure about this process, please utilize the “CUSTOM GANG SHEET” option and for a small fee, we will make sure all artwork is print-ready.
We will not refund Gang Sheet orders due to file issues of any kind.

How to Build a Gang Sheet

1. Gather Your Artwork
2. Gang Sheet Size
3. Design Software
4. Gang Sheet Canvas
5. Arrange Designs

8. Order Gang Sheet

A gang sheet is a print layout that maximizes the use of printing material by placing multiple designs on a single sheet.

FILE REQUIREMENTS

  • High-Resolution, 300 ppi
  • PNG file on transparent background
  • Individual design files if you use our builder to lay out your gang sheet.
  • A gang sheet file sized exactly for the size needed will be uploaded into the builder.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating a gang sheet. There are also valuable resources to the right should you need additional assistance:

  1. Gather Your Artwork
    1. Collect all the designs you want to include on the gang sheet.
    2. Ensure the files are high-resolution and Vector or PNG files on a transparent background.
    3. High-resolution is 300 ppi at full design size in RGB color format.
  2. Determine Gang Sheet Size or the number of images you need
    1. Our printers run material that is 22″ (inches) Wide by up to 20′ (feet) Long.
    2. You may need to do some basic math based on your individual images to determine the length needed.
  3. Design Software
    1. There are several design software that can be used to build your finished gang sheet.
    2. If you cannot access one of the software options below, you can use our builder to upload and layout your gang sheet. See the tutorial video to the right.
    3. We recommend Adobe Illustrator. However, we also have a tutorial on using Canva as well.
    4. Other options include Corel Draw, Adobe Photoshop, Affinity Designer, and Inkscape.
    5. The most important thing to remember is that all files used in laying out a gang sheet must be high-resolution and the file that is submitted for printing must be high-resolution as well.
  4. Set Up Gang Sheet Canvas
    1. Create a new document in your design software with the exact dimensions of the final sheet size.
    2. Do not make files larger to account for margins. A 22″ wide gang sheet should be exactly 22″ wide.
    3. Use guides or grids to help align and space designs evenly.
  5. Place and Arrange Designs
    1. Import/place all designs in your new gang sheet.
    2. Scale, duplicate, and/or move each design to fit within the sheet without overlapping.
    3. We recommend leaving a .15″ margin between images for cutting designs apart.
    4. Do not add a margin at the artboard’s edge, but ensure no images extend outside the artboard.
    5. Rotate designs if necessary to maximize material usage.
  6. Final File Checks
    1. Once the gang sheet file is finished, double-check that you are exporting it as PNG on a transparent background.
    2. Also, confirm that the file is exported in High Resolution, 300 ppi.
  7. Saving Your File
    1. We request a specific file-naming convention when it comes to gang sheets. This helps us stay organized and allows you to quickly reference files should you need a reprint.
    2. File Name Example: “lastname_gangsheet_description.png
    3. johnson_gangsheet_christmas.png
  8. Ordering Your Gang Sheet
    1. You are now ready to submit your finished gang sheet for printing.
    2. Use the button to the right to:
      1. Upload your finished gang sheet file.
      2. Upload individual files and use our tool to build your gang sheet.
    3. Once you add your gang sheet to the cart, you will be redirected to the checkout page. You must select the correct size and pay the correct amount during checkout or your entire order will be deleted.

Tips

  • Efficiency: Use as much of the sheet as possible to reduce material waste.
  • Consistency: Ensure uniform scaling and positioning.
  • Proofing: Double-check the layout before printing to avoid errors.
